How to sign a PDF without printing it
For many forms, you can avoid printing and scanning: place a graphical signature on the page, check its position and download the new PDF. First, however, it is important to understand what type of signature the recipient requires.

Graphical, electronic and digital signatures are not the same
Drawing a signature with your finger or importing an image creates a graphical representation inside the PDF. It is the visual equivalent of a signature, but it adds no cryptographic certificate and does not by itself prove who inserted it.
A digital or qualified electronic signature requires specific tools and certificates. If an authority, contract or procedure expressly requires that type of signature, an image alone is not enough.
How to insert your signature
Make sure you have the right to sign the document and use only your own signature or one that you are authorised to handle.
- 01
Open the document
Load the PDF from your device and go to the page containing the signature space.
- 02
Create or import the signature
Draw it in the signature box or choose an image already stored on your device.
- 03
Position and adjust it
Move the signature onto the line, resize it and reopen it if you want to replace the drawing or image.
- 04
Export and verify
Download the signed PDF, open it again and check that the signature, date and declarations are correct.
When you may need something else
The required form depends on the document, the recipient and the context. Ask for confirmation before sending if you are unsure.
- Processes that expressly require a digital, qualified or authenticated signature.
- Documents for which reliable identification of the signer is required.
- Procedures that require a specific portal, format or certificate.
- Documents with significant consequences for which professional advice is appropriate.
Protect the signature image
A file containing your signature is sensitive information. Do not leave it in shared folders or import images received from people who are not authorised. In CompilaPDF, the signature is processed in the browser and embedded only in the copy you download.
Delete any intermediate copies you no longer need and send the final document through a channel suited to the sensitivity of its contents.
Signing with Adobe Acrobat Reader or in the browser
Adobe Acrobat Reader lets you type, draw or import an image of a signature. CompilaPDF offers Draw and Import modes directly in the browser and embeds the signature only in the PDF you download.
In both cases, the appearance of a signature should not automatically be confused with a digital or qualified electronic signature. Always check which type of signature the recipient requires.
Sign a PDF with iLovePDF or use a local graphical signature?
iLovePDF provides a broader signing service: as well as adding your own signature, it lets you invite other signers and offers options such as an audit trail and digital signatures. The service requires the document to be uploaded and applies specific retention rules to signed documents.
CompilaPDF does not manage requests, identities, certificates or audit trails. It simply places a graphical signature in the browser and downloads the PDF. For a simple signature accepted by the recipient, the workflow is straightforward; to collect signatures or obtain additional assurances, you need a dedicated service.
